The Gospel, is really the ‘good news’ that you can actually know God in a personal way through his Son – Jesus. That is what our focus is here at Church in the Hills, it’s what we talk about, the gospel is central to all that we do. It’s the gospel message that drives our church – that Jesus came to share the message of God’s radical hope and love for this world, even when we feel like hope is gone.
The Gospel is that God is a Holy, Perfect God. You and I on the other hand – are not, we mess up and at times screw up our lives and then think – “How could God love me “? We call that state – as being in sin. Sin, defined, is really thinking you are god, and that you don’t need the creator. Sin, as the author ‘Kierkegaard’ defines – is building your identity, your worth and happiness – on anything other than God. Here is the crazy wild fact – that while we are in rebellion against God, and marginalize God in our lives and try to live by our own niceness – God sent his son Jesus to restore you to God. Jesus died so all your sin would be dealt with, and then God raised Jesus from the dead, vindicating all the claims Jesus had made about what his life and death were about and for.
The Gospel then comes down to a choice – “what will you do with Jesus”? God calls us to repent, to turn from our independence and to trust him as Lord over our lives. Now that which we deserve, we will not get, and what he deserved for us, will be given to us. We then have faith in Him and trust him, and this is the Gospel. This is how we participate in that ‘good news’.
