Deacons
One of the offices set out in scripture is the office of deacon. The NT word is diakonos, and can be translated simply servant, and refers to service in general. Deacons attend to the practical details the church life, such as administration, and care of church members.
Qualifications for deacons are set fourth in 1 Timothy 3:8-12, and the function of a deacon can be seen in Acts 6. Upon the recommendation of the apostles, the church appointed deacons to make food distribution among widows more equitable.
In this there are three ways deacons contribute to the unity of the church.
Deacons care for all the members of the church.
Deacons allowed the apostles to devote their time in particular to ministry of the word and prayer, Acts 6:2-4.
Deacons foster unity by distributing work throughout the congregation
This basic understanding of deacons inform our selection of deacons. Deacons are ‘uniters not dividers’. Deacons are those who care about the church as a whole, not lobbyist for their own cause.
As we grow in the years ahead, the goal is to continue to foster a culture of care and concern for the people of CitH. The role of lead pastor is to continue in the office that he has been called here to do, pastoral care, hospital visitations, home visits, calling those who are missing for an extended time, etc. This is making sure that no one falls through the ‘cracks’ so to speak. This is to make sure that a lead pastor does not burn out, that care is distributed, that people in the church sense care beyond the ‘paid professional’.
